As mentioned before, there are two classes of mechanisms by which acupuncture and electro-acupuncture can affect the body. The first is probably the best known. It is through the nervous system, mainly by affecting the autonomic nervous system. The second is less well known but is equally important in understanding how acupuncture and electro-acupuncture work. It is various bio-electric effects. Being an acupuncturist, we need to know how things work to make our treatments work better and to be able to use that knowledge in difficult conditions. As well as to avoid doing harm. I have always been curious how things work which is why I studied engineering first. I brought that curiosity to my new profession and over my 30 years as an acupuncturist I have learned a lot that I was not taught in school. My interests have brought me to know things that other acupuncturists don’t know about such as the work of Dr. Nordenstrom and Dr. Darras and Dr. DeVernejoul. My background and interests have allowed me to bring it all together into a coherent whole. My book is my attempt to share that knowledge with other acupuncturists. As I say on my home page, I am trying to make acupuncture a true science and bring it into the 21st century. This knowledge has allowed me to treat conditions that others (both Chinese and Western) couldn’t. It has allowed me to make up new treatments that have proven to work clinically. And there are more to come. Scientific Acupuncture to me is acupuncture that takes advantage of this knowledge. It is not just doing treatments that Western medicine says works. That is how “Medical Acupuncturists” and “Modern Acupuncturists” claim. They are just doing “classical Acupuncture” that has been proven to work. Their treatments are not based on how it works. My way of doing things does. Now when I was teaching, many of my students did not seem to care how it worked, they just wanted to know how to do it. They also liked the “low tech” nature of acupuncture, and didn’t have much interest in electro-acupuncture. But you will get much better results if you know why you are doing things a certain way. Knowing what I know will make your own treatments work better and you will know how to treat more things effectively both with and without needles. Both the East and West have things to learn from each other and some things they both could learn.Most of that information is contained in these pages and posts here.
