About Microsystems
A microsystem is where the whole body is reflected on some part of the body. Even some of the traditional points owe some of their functions to their relationship to a microsystem. Along with the microsystems shown below, every long bone in the body is also a reflection of the spine. This is why GB34 is more appropriate for treating back problems, while GB41 is more fore upper back/shoulder problems.
But why do we have micro systems in the first place? No one I have heard knows. With my background in engineering, I have come up with an some ideas that makes sense to me. The reflex areas on the body come from three sources. First is “classical points” association with certain parts or functions of the body. This is part of the function of the autonomic nervous system. When a part or function of the body id disturber in some way, a “stress response” is sent to the associated point through the sympathetic nervous system. This results in the sympathetic innervation at the point becoming more sensitive and more electrically active. That is why the point becomes more tender on palpation and more easily found with a point locator. Because of this, palpation can be used to confirm your diagnosis and find/confirm your proposed treatment. Typically, when you needle a point, you are stimulating the parasympathetic nerve ending at the poin which lies deeper in the muscle. However “sensitive” patients will get a parasympathetic response from sympathetic stimulation .That is why massaging tender classical points can have a beneficial effect. This applies to classical points and point in the micro systems (ear, hand and scalp in particular)as well. The second reason has to do with why we have micro systems in the first place. The brain likes to work like a hologram. part of a hologram contains an image of the whole object. In a similar way every part of the body is a reflection of the whole. Even classical points get some of their functions from these relationships. The third source of reflex relationships is functional relationships. Such as the natural firing rates of motor nerve fibers can affect the tension of muscles. another example is the natural beat rate of the heart. Now let’s look at the micro-systems most used in acupuncture.
